UNT: brand new horror for school graduates.
The 18-year-old Marina says she is “freaking” unsure about upcoming Unified National Test (UNT). “I think it’s not fair to musicians, sportsmen, journalists, artists to write UNT because Mathematics and fourth subject are not relevant to their future careers.” Marina will take part in complex testing, which will be held from 10th to 15th of June.
The main question about impending examination today is who will pass and who will fail; because the minimum points you must get to enter the university has increased on 20%. A lot of pupils will have to make a final step into mature life by passing UNT and entering university.
140,000 other school graduates will join Marina in what ought to be decisive point to their future life. Up to the year of 2005 the entrance rate at UNT was 40 points out of 120. In 2006 the entrance rate was changed to 50 points and this year it finally reached 60. According to Kamet Nagimbek, Head of UNT Center, 14% of all school graduates did not take part in complex testing and 25% failed to reach minimum entrance rate. However, in 2006, only 130-140 students did not pass the UNT, even though the minimum was raised to 50 points, claimed Mr. Nagimbek. When he was asked about the probability of large number of those who will not pass over 60 points, he said: “Even if my daughter will not pass UNT, it is not a problem, she can be a cleaner or whatever.”
Kamet Nagimbek admitted that there were cases when his friends contacted him to get the answers for their children, but he quickly adds that the system does not give an opportunity to do so even if he desired that. “Even the children of bureaucrats and ministers are not always passing the UNT,” he said, “There was even a case when the son of one university head master did not pass UNT, while the daughter of this university’s cleaner got the scholarship to this university.” He also mentioned that the transparency of UNT is always under control of “commissions that come from everywhere.”
“I hate UNT,” said Turar Begizbayev, 2007 school graduate, “Honestly, when you are just 18 years old all your future might depend on it.” When he was 17 had to choose the subject that according to his words would have a big influence on his career. Now, he is not sure in the accuracy of his choice. Moreover, he claims that there is no any systematic way of giving knowledge. “I know a lot of people who are simply memorizing questionnaire answers preferring them to books.”
The only alternative for complex testing is oral examination. In Kamet Nagimbek’s opinion the oral examination is not good. “Students can run up on a very biased examiner, who probably may dislike his eyes color, his hairstyle, gender, name. Sometimes smart pupils can have a bad smell and examiners might dislike it.”
Marika Georgiadi, a member of Admission Center at Kazakhstan Institute of Management, Economics, and Strategic Research (KIMEP), says that the Institute administration does not care about the UNT results in a whole. But she added that if a student will not get an optimal number of points from profile subject they will not accept him or her, even if the overall result of UNT is much higher than 60 points. For example, BSc applicants must get a minimum of 18 points from mathematics on complex testing.
The tension is rising as the UNT gets near and near. In one of Almaty districts about five pupils from one class did not get 60 points from trial testing. Marina V. and Tina, girlfriends of Marina, are very scared about upcoming complex testing and feel very unconfident about the future. Tina scored 66 points on trial testing, but she thinks it is not enough to be sure about the results of examination. Marina herself scored 53 points and spent four hours on it. The only opportunity for her to enter the university if she fails UNT is to go to Almaty branches of Russian Universities. “I am very scared.”
